Our God has called home on Thursday, February 6, 2014 his beloved adopted son, Jim. Child of the late Edgar Welch, fireman, and Agnes Cekine Welch, registered nurse, he was born and reared in Wilmington. Jim attended St. Patrick's School, Salesianum High School, and St. Mary's College in Kentucky.
Active in Boy Scouting from grade school, he became an Eagle Scout and received the Ad Altare Dei Award in Scouting for service to his church. Jim's love of nature and the outdoors was founded in his years of scouting experience. He stayed active in scouting, giving back some of what he received to others by being a cubmaster, scoutmaster, and explorer advisor for several troops. He extensively traveled in the United States, Canada, and Europe marveling at the works of God to be found in nature.
After college he began his working career for nine years in Wilmington with WSFS Bank. Having served as a mortgage officer, he left the bank and went into real estate sales with his friend and broker, Ralph C. Shivone in 1971, the beginning of almost 40 years of service. They moved to B. Gary Scott, Realtor where Jim managed the Chadds Ford office then leaving B. Gary Scott to manage Fox and Lazo's West Chester office and L.D. Dickinson Co. in Chadds Ford. In 1990 he joined Remax Associates as a Broker, licensed in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, becoming a partner in that firm in 1993.
Jim taught real estate for many years at Brandywine College, Widener University, Wilmington University, Delaware Tech and Goldey Beacom University. He was a believer in real estate education and held many valued professional designations. He loved combining education with trips to Colorado, Illinois, and Maryland. With the death of his beloved son, Jimmy, he retired from active real estate but maintained his many state licenses.
Jim was involved in his church and community. He served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at St. Mary Magdelan and Immaculate Heart of Mary Churches. He was active in the Cursillo movement and Charismatic Renewal. He served on the boards of Directors for St. Patrick's Senior Center, the Advisory Board for the Center for Pastoral Care, Delaware Pre-School and Archmere Academy. Active in the Brandywine Kiwanis, Rotary, Wilmington Jaycees, Big Brothers, Lombardy PTA and Alfred I. du Pont Council of PTA. He was an active supporter of Salesianum School from where his two sons also graduated.
For over thirty years Jim was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and Alanon, where he was well respected, loved, and touched the lives of many people.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his loving sister, Judy Welch Kee, and son Jimmy Welch. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Newell Welch; son Sean N. Welch and wife Catherine Woods of Adelaide, Australia and their children, Agnes and Felicity Welch, and his daughter Megan Catherine Welch and her children, Aaron Copeland, Luccia, Gianni, Dominic, and Dalaina Gallucio.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 11 at 11:30 at Immaculate Heart of Mary, 4701 Weldin Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803.
