Dr. John J. Burke, Jr., 68 of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Christiana Hospital.
John was born in Wilmington on November 7, 1943, the son of the late Ethyl (Wilson) and John J. Burke Sr. He grew up playing tennis and basketball, and his speed on the basketball court earned him the knick name "Bullett". John also excelled at pool, and while in college one of his greatest thrills was the opportunity to shoot pool with the legendary Willie Mosconi. John was an avid hunter and a competitive trap shooter, but perhaps his favorite pastime was a bi-weekly poker game with his best friends that lasted over 40 years. He loved life, the people around him and truly lived life to its fullest. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, infectious smile and generosity.
John graduated from Salesianum School in 1961, the University of Delaware in 1966 and Georgetown University School of Dentistry in 1970. He was a member of the Delaware Dental Society for many years. After practicing dentistry for 38 years, John retired in June, 2010 to enjoy more time at his Florida residence.
John is survived by his present wife, Molly; his son, John J. Burke, III of Wilmington; his daughter, Erin Newcomb and husband, Larry of Hilltown, PA; his grandson, Liam; his brother, James Burke and wife, Diane of Wilmington; and his step children, Derek Fox and wife, Ashley and Jill Nieswand and husband, Blake.
Friends will miss his antics while playing cards, hunting geese in Canada or making that perfect bank shot to sink the eight ball.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Monday, September 17 from 4- 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington on Tuesday, September 18 at 10 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations in memory of John to the Rev. William Keech, OSFS Scholarship Fund, c/o Salesianum School, 1801 N. Broom Street, Wilmington, DE 19802.
