John J. Elisens, age 91, of Hockessin, DE passed away peacefully Saturday February 1, 2014 with his wife Helen and family at his side. He grew up in Portage, PA, where he graduated from high school and then proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1942 -1945 as a naval instructor and in the Pacific theatre on the USS Donaldson DE-44. John was a master craftsman who produced a rich legacy of construction projects and fine furniture. After his long career as a master carpenter and construction foreman in Wilmington, DE, he and Helen retired to Ocean View, DE from 1985-2009 in a beautiful geodesic dome house custom-built by John. From 2009, Helen and John lived in Wilmington and Hockessin. John will be remembered fondly as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle and as a generous and caring individual who freely gave time and energy to family, friends, church, and neighbors.
John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Helen Elisens; daughter, Madeline Reynolds (Keith); sons, Wayne (Merrie) and John; grandchildren, Kerin Duff (Bryan), Amanda, and Brent; and great grandchildren, Liam and Avery Duff. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary Elizeus and five sisters: Margaret, Madeline, Mary, Helen, and Betty.
