Dr. Luis Mario Garcia Sr., age 87, passed away on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at his home in Clermont, FL.

Dr. Garcia was born on November 13, 1924 to Oliverio and Ernestina Garcia in Fredonia, Columbia. Mario is survived by his wife of 17 years, Cynthia L. Heck; as well as his four children, Dr. Luis Mario, Jr. (Kathleen) of Centerville, DE, Patricia Meyer (Douglas) of Gresham, OR, Dr. Mark J. (Elaine) of Greenville, DE and Carol Beane (Thomas) of Wilmington, DE; as well as 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Octavio (Cali, Columbia). He was previously married for 37 years to Marguerite Perrone of Kennett Square, PA, who preceded his death in 1992; and was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Mariela, Emma, Oliverio, Gustavo, Gonzalo and Fanny.

Dr. Garcia earned his medical degree from the University of Antioquia in 1951 and after completing work in the Choco Jungle in the Amazon, he moved to the United States in 1952, where he completed a surgical year at the University of Pennsylvania followed by his residency in surgery at the Memorial Hospital in Wilmington. It was there that he refined his skills while entertaining staff, physicians and patients alike, earning him the nickname "The Cisco Kid". Upon completing his residency, he opened practice in Wilmington where he enjoyed serving the medical community for 30 years. He was well known for his cutting edge techniques and exquisite surgical hands, including being one of the first surgeons in the United States, and the first in Delaware, to perform hernia repairs under local anesthesia. He lectured and published articles and was one of the founding members of "Doctors For Emergency Services" (DFES). Dr. Garcia was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the New Castle County Medical Society and Member Emeritus of the Medical Society of Delaware. Dr. Garcia was always in love with music, dancing, gardening, carpentry and traveling. He also enjoyed tennis, billiards and golf.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville on Sunday, August 19 at 3 pm.
