Mark Rogers Obituary

Mark E. Rogers

AGE: 61 • Newark

Noted fantasy author and illustrator Mark E. Rogers died of an apparent heart attack Feb. 2 while hiking with his family in California. Best known as the creator of the "Samurai Cat" series and "Zorachus," a 10 novel epic, Rogers' other works include "The Dead" regarded by many as a classic end-of-the-world novel and an early novella, "The Runestone" which was made into a movie starring Peter Riegert and William Hickey. He is survived by his beloved family: wife, Dr. Katherin Rogers, a philosophy professor at the University of Delaware; children, Sophia and husband Jason Modesette, Dana Point, Ca.; Jeanette and fiance Shannon Gifford and their daughter, Indigo; his sons, Patrick and Nicholas, all Newark, Del.; his sister, Lois, Lakewood, N.J and many friends.

I had been a fan of Mark's writing for many years and finally got the courage to email him. They say never meet the people you admire. That they will inevitably let you down. This could not be further from what happened with Mark! He replies almost immediately and was so kind and gracious. He even had me check out some of his upcoming work, which was amazing of course. Sadly it wasn't published before his untimely end. Farewell to a great guy with a huge heart and condolences to his family and friends. As much as I miss him I know you, who were close to him, will miss him even more.

I knew Mark through his Samaurai Cat paintings and other works, and met him at various East Coast science fiction conventions where his work was featured in art shows. He was a fine artist and a splendid person, and I regret his passing.

Mark and I went to high school together .We ate lunch, played football together. He shared a lot of his art work with me. I still have a picture of him helping me score a touchdown during a football game. I wish I could communicate somehow with the family to let them know how gifted he was at Pt Beach high. I will miss my friend.

Mark Rogers was my friend for 50 years and the world is a poorer place without him. He left us as he would have wanted to, being with his family. I'll miss you, good friend!
