Sr. Mary Therese OCDS, Mardelle Yackshaw

Died peacefully at Parkview Nursing Home on March 7, 2011.

Mardelle was a native of Clinton, IA. She graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 and was enrolled in the pre-med program at Northwestern University when she was recruited into the United States Army Nurse Corps at the onset of WWII and served in the European Theatre until the end of the war. It was there that she met her husband, Thomas A. Wood Jr., who passed away in 1963. Mardelle enjoyed working as a registered nurse and found success in sales. She was also very active in fund raising for Archmere Academy as well as St. Edmond's.

She was featured on the cover of a Philadelphia Bulletin Sunday Magazine for the article "Women Working?Is This the Wave of the Future?" in 1958. She has been a member of the Carmelite Order for more than twenty years.

She is survived by; her children, Thomas A. Wood and Catherine T. Wood both of Wilmington, DE., John Y. Wood of Cleveland, OH and Earl W. Wood of Davenport, IA., 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and her sister, Sr. Mary Amata CHM of Ottumwa, IA. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Catherine Yackshaw, 2 brothers and 3 sisters

Family and friends are invited to visitation at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME 1900 Delaware Avenue Wilmington, DE 19806 on Thursday, March 10, from 12:30-1:30 pm, followed by a brief service at 1:30 pm. Interment in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE will be held privately with the family.
