Patricia "Patsy"

du Pont

Patricia du Pont, founder of the Fair Hill Pony Club, died peacefully at her Elkton (Fairview), Maryland, home on Tuesday, February 19, 2013. She was 94.

Miss du Pont was the youngest of four daughters of the late Archibald and Elizabeth Heyward du Pont. In addition, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Ann Valk, Carolyn Gibbons, and Marie (Levering) Scarlett.

An accomplished horsewoman, show rider, and avid foxhunter, Miss du Pont enjoyed foxhunting with the Elkridge-Harford Hunt Club, and later established and hunted her own pack of foxhounds.

In 1954 she founded one of the first US Pony Clubs. Unique to the Fair Hill Pony Club was that Miss du Pont supplied the horses and her farm for lessons. Generations of Cecil County, Maryland, children who did not own a horse were given the opportunity to learn to ride and care for a horse.

Miss du Pont never married. She loved her dogs and her horses, taking in many dogs and horses whose owners could no longer care for them. Through a private foundation, Miss du Pont made provisions allowing these dogs and horses to live out their natural lives in retirement at her farm.

At the request of Miss du Pont, there will be no memorial service.

Those wishing to make a remembrance donation may contribute to their local animal welfare organization, or to the Fair Hill Nature Center, 630 Tawes Drive, Elkton, MD 21921.
