Paul J. Santa Barbara III

Paul J. Santa Barbara III, age 63 of Ocean View, DE formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 9, 2012 surrounded by his loving family at his home, after a yearlong battle with mesothelioma.

He was born in Wilmington, DE on March 13, 1949 son of Paul J. and Edith "Peg" (Marshall) Santa Barbara Jr. Paul served in the United States Navy. Mr. Santa Barbara retired as a firefighter for the city of Wilmington after 28 years of service. After his retirement, Paul worked in security at the University of Delaware and was currently employed with DelDOT working out of the Gravel Hill yard.

Fire service was Paul's true vocation; he was a life member of Holloway Terrace and Christiana Volunteer Fire Departments. Paul was also a member of Millville Volunteer Fire Company where he was currently serving as the safety officer. He served on the parish council, was an usher and a Eucharistic minister at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Bethany Beach. Paul was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #9053 in Ocean City, MD, a member of the AMPOL, the Delmarva Polish Club and was part of the Captain Mlotkowski Brigade. In his spare time, he enjoyed camping, boating, and traveling with his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Denise M. (Tomczyk) Santa Barbara; a son, Paul J. (Melissa) Santa Barbara IV of Frankford, DE; a daughter, Heather Santa Barbara of Absecon, NJ; his mother, "Peg" of Wilmington, DE; 3 grandchildren, Lexi Santa Barbara, Cole and Kira Brigden; 2 brothers, Michael of Ocean View, DE and Thomas of Elsmere, DE a sister, Patricia Moore of Bear, DE; numerous brother and sister-in-laws and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, August 14, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, DE. A visitation will be held on Monday evening from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Rd., Ocean View, DE, where a prayer service will be held at 8:15 pm. Interment with firemen's honors will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Dagsboro, DE.
