Paul R. Steyermark Obituary
Paul R. Steyermark

AGE: 90 • Wilmington

Paul R. Steyermark passed away on March 5, 2014. He was born and raised in Warsaw, Poland.

During World War II, Paul spent 22 months in a German labor camp, first in Silesia building a power plant, then on the move near the front lines, digging trenches and building log bunkers. Paul was liberated in Czechoslovakia on May 8, 1945 by the Soviet Army and returned to Poland.

Paul studied chemical engineering for three years at the Gdansk Polytechnic, then obtained a degree in chemical sciences (lic. sc. chim.) from the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium) in 1949. Two years later, he went to Canada and obtained in 1955 a PhD degree from the University of Montreal. He first did clinical research, then industrial research, but in 1958 left for the United States and worked for ten years as a senior research chemist for W.R. Grace Co.

During the Vietnam War, Paul did classified research on defense against chemical warfare agents, and this led him to the conclusion that there had to be a better way to make a living. During the last three and one-half years of his employment, he attended the George Washington University Law School, where he obtained a JD degree (with distinction). He brought his family to Wilmington in the fall of 1968 and joined the Legal Department of the DuPont Company as a patent attorney. Following his retirement in 1993, he consulted for the company for three more years. In retirement, Paul enjoyed many years of continuing education and many friendships at the Academy of Lifelong Learning. He was a member of The Occidentals. Paul and Jeanne loved to travel to Europe, especially to France, where Paul had family.

Paul was predeceased by his parents, Aleksander and Cecylja Steyermark; by his wife of 55 years, Jeanne (Rousseau) Steyermark; and by his brother Georges Steyermark and Georges' first wife, Andree. He is survived by his son, Alexander Steyermark, with his wife, Amy Briamonte, and their son, Jobim Steyermark; by his daughter, Anne (Steyermark) Austin, with her daughters, Cameron and Cailin Austin; and by his brother's second wife, Lydie Steyermark, and their son, Anthony Steyermark.

Friends may call on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 from 10:30-11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naaman's Road, Wilmington, DE, 19810 where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 A.M.
