Reba Mae Ashcraft of Elkton, MD, passed away at the age of 81 on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, surrounded by her family. Reba was born in Wilmington, DE, to Beatrice Clineff and Francis Quigley. Reba was raised in Happy Valley in Wilmington DE and attended Sacred Heart grade school and graduated from Wilmington High School, class of 1949.
Reba was married to Leon T. Ashcraft, Jr., the love of her life, for 50 years, sharing their lives in Elsmere, Kiamensi Gardens and Elkton, MD. After marriage, she was a stay-at-home mom, raising her 5 children, until she began her career at Shop Rite in Stanton where she worked for many years. She also was a den mother, taught CCD at St. John the Beloved and was often called a second mother by many of her children's friends.
Reba and Leon built their dream retirement home along the Elk River. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, and family and friends down along the Elk River, which was nicknamed Camp Ashcraft. She also loved baking, decorating cakes, crabs, fireworks, gardening and the beach.
Reba is survived by her children, Leon Ashcraft, III and Nina, Faith Smith and Butch, Jane Clark and Dan, and David Ashcraft and Regina; her siblings, Beth Mayer and John, Paul Winnington, Walter Winnington and Geraldine Stephey; her grandchildren Justin, Jason, Joshua, Jill, Alison, Matthew, Nathan, David, Italia, and Tommy; her special niece and nephews John Ryan, Julie and Jeremy Mayer. She was predeceased by her husband, Leon, her son, James T. Ashcraft and her granddaughter, Amanda McCormack.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road Wilmington, DE 19808 on Wednesday November 20, at 10AM. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road Wilmington, DE 19808 on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8PM.
