Richard C. Mathiesen, age 86, of Newark, DE passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Richard served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He worked as a New York City Port Authority policeman for 20 years. After his retirement from the force, Richard worked as a loan officer, then as Vice President of Valley National Bank. An avid Brooklyn Dodgers/New York Mets fan, Richard enjoyed traveling, bowling, and spending time with his family.
Richard is survived by his son, Mark Mathiesen and wife Sandy; his daughter Eileen Dunham and her fiancé Michael Larkin; and former son in law Gary D. Dunham; his sisters: Alma Rhodes and partner William Tubb, and Christine Dowless; his grandchildren: Jennifer Dunham, Christopher Dunham and wife Laura, and Sarah Mathiesen; and one great-grandchild: Noah Dunham. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Lillian Mathiesen; and parents, George & Florence (Kaiser) Mathiesen.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, January 18, in Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19702 from 2-3 pm followed by a service in celebration of Richard's life at 3 pm.
