Ruth Sampsel Halliday

Ruth Sampsel Halliday passed away on Thursday, March 13 in Castro Valley, California, at the age of 91 after a long illness.

Born in West Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1922, Ruth graduated from West Reading High School in 1940 and moved to Wilmington, Delaware to live with her aunt and uncle, Clarence (Doc) and Frances Schuler and to attend business school at Beacom College. Upon graduation from Beacom, she began working for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Wilmington, where she met her future husband Herbert Halliday. The two became engaged while Herb was serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and they married in 1946 upon his return from service in the South Pacific.

Ruth and Herb settled in Wilmington and raised two children: Hayward Council Member Barbara Halliday and Donald Herbert Halliday. She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. After her children started school, Ruth took a secretarial job with Atlas Powder Company, known today as Astra Zeneca. She retired in 1981and moved with Herb to Clearwater, Florida, where they enjoyed an active social life. She especially enjoyed fun with her friends from On Top of the World, worship at Chapel by the Sea on Clearwater Beach, and most of all, Spring Training games where she rooted for her Philadelphia Phillies.

In 2003, Ruth and Herb moved to Baywood Court retirement community in Castro Valley, California, to be closer to her daughter Barbara and son-in-law Rick Imsdahl. She enjoyed participating in events there, especially the ones involving the neighborhood children. Herb died in 2010, and Ruth moved to Baywood Health Center in 2012.

In addition to Barbara and Rick, Ruth is survived by her nephew Charles Coleman Jr. of New Castle and her nephews Steven and David Halliday of Middletown, and many good friends of all ages. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert, son Donald, and sister and brother-in-law Lillian and Charles B. Coleman.
