Virginia "Ginny" Love Stevenson

Virginia (Ginny) Love Stevenson Mentzer

Of Wilmington, DE and formerly of Brunswick, GA, died peacefully at age 93 on December 22, 2012. She was a devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who retained her vivacious southern charm all her life.

Born in Jacksonville, FL, Ginny was raised in Brunswick, GA where she graduated from Glynn Academy. Following her marriage to Bob Mentzer in Brunswick, in 1942, the couple moved to Wilmington, DE where Mr. Mentzer was employed by Hercules, Inc.

Ginny was an active member and Deacon of Westminster Presbyterian Church, a member of Hercules Country Club, and a perennial volunteer at the Wilmington Flower Market where she shared her love and knowledge of gardening. Ginny also loved to dance. She and her husband, Bob, were active participants in a number of Wilmington ballroom dance groups and cotillions.

Ginny worked on a part-time basis for many years at Bootiful Shoes, in Greenville. Prior to that, she had also worked as a flower arrangement designer, a bank teller for Delaware Trust Company, and a library aid for Tower Hill Lower School and Ritchie Elementary School.

Ginny is survived by her sons Richard C. Mentzer, of Pulaski, NY and William V. Mentzer (Millie), of Wilmington, DE; her granddaughters Lesley Findlay (Joshua), Virginia Percy (Sean), Sharon Killheffer (Edward), Linda Umbreit (Steven), Terri Murphy (Edward); her grandson Robert L. Mentzer, III (Lara); and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Mentzer and her son, Robert L. Mentzer, Jr. (Carrie) of Troy, NH; and her sister, Mary S. Melnyk, of Brunswick, GA.

The family wishes to thank all of the nurses, CNAs and staff of Gilpin Hall for their many kindnesses and compassionate care of Ginny during the last years of her life.

A memorial service will be held in the early spring at the Westminster Presbyterian Church at a date and time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Gilpin Hall, 1101 Gilpin Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806.
