Meehan, Jr.

William F. Meehan Jr., age 84, of Wilmington and Hockessin, DE died January 14, 2013 at the St. Francis Hospital Compassionate Care Hospice surrounded by family.

The son of William F. Meehan Sr. and Margaret C. Gormley, Bill is survived by son William F. III of Wilmington and daughter M. Lisa Meehan Wilkins, also of Wilmington and with whom he lived in his final weeks; sister Joan Kane; and grandson Eric William Mushrush, along with numerous nieces and nephews and six Godchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Catherine, and sisters Bernadette Dugan and Katherine Huhman.

After attending West Catholic High School in Philadelphia, Bill graduated from Salesianum School, where he was a class secretary and participated in student government, intramural sports, dramatics, and the radio club.

He earned diplomas from The Artillery School, Anti-aircraft and Guided Missiles Branch at Fort Bliss, TX, while serving during the Korean War in the U.S. Army, and was honorably discharged. He attended the University of Delaware and Widener University.

Bill enjoyed hunting as a teenager and later in life discovered a passion for sailing as part of a recreational crew that included cousin Monk Gormley and lifelong friend Bill Butler. His other interests included American railroad history, navigational charts, blue grass music, and late twentieth-century maps of the United States.

He served as an usher at Christ Our King Church and belonged to the Dupont Country Club, Irish Culture Club of Delaware, and Fairfax Civic Association. He held membership card number six in the Hockessin Fire Company.

Bill retired from the DuPont Experimental Station with thirty-six years of service performing research for the chemical company.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Christ Our King Church, 2810 N. Monroe St., Wilmington, 19802 on January 24, 2013 at 9:30 a.m., followed by committal at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Ashland, DE.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Rev. John L. Birkenheuer, OSFS, Memorial Scholarship at Salesianum School, 1801 N. Broom Street, Wilmington, DE 19802.
