Winfield W. Lane

Winfield W. Lane, 89 of Wilmington, DE peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 5, 2013.

Mr. Lane was born in Denton, MD on October 12, 1923, son of the late Elwood and Helen (Bishop) Lane. A veteran of the United States Navy, he proudly served our country during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad after 24 years and embarked on a second career with the DuPont Company at the Experimental Station, retiring in 1985 after 20 years of service.

Mr. Lane was very active in several organizations throughout his life. A member of the Masonic order, he served as Past Master of the Granite-Corinthian Lodge #34 and Past Most Wise Master of the Scottish Rite, and was a member of the Royal Arch Masons Daylight Chapter #10 and the Five Points Chapter #13 of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the VFW Post 2907, where he served on the Grand Staff from 1998-1999 and was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #1, where he served as Past Noble Grand. Mr. Lane was a long time member of Hillcrest-Bellefonte United Methodist Church and was a current member of Richardson Park United Methodist Church.

His first wife, Elizabeth (Webb), passed away in 1971 and his second wife, Suzanne (Franklin), passed away in 2001.

Mr. Lane is survived by his son, Winfield "Bill" W. Lane II and wife, Gail; his daughters, Patricia Ann Quick and husband, Jim and Judith A. Lane; companion, Dorothy Scarborough; step children, David Whelihan, Maureen Whelihan-Brown, MD, Joseph Whelihan and Gina Whelihan; 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Julia, Katherine and Betty.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Saturday, October 12 from 9:00 - 10:15AM. Masonic Services will begin at 10:15AM, followed by Funeral Services at 10:30AM. Interment will be in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica, DE.
