Robert C. Smith, long time resident of Wilmington, DE passed away in his home on Friday February 21, 2014.
Born in Wilmington, DE, Bob was the son of the late Brady and Lucy Smith. He was raised in Virginia, graduating from Powhatan High School in Powhatan, VA, but later moved back to Delaware with his parents, where he briefly attended the University of Delaware. He married the late Ann Marie Sophy on October 12, 1969. Bob and Ann Marie then moved to their house on Limestone Road, where they raised their two children, Dan and Laurie. Ann Marie passed in 1998 and Bob remained at that house until his death.
As a young man, Bob was a school bus and delivery truck driver. Eventually, he turned to sales and spent most of his career selling hardware both wholesale and retail. He worked for the historic Belknap Hardware & Manufacturing Company and traveled throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland selling to regional hardware stores. He later sold hardware for Masback Hardware and then Ace Hardware. Tired of travelling, he eventually took a retail sales job at Lyons Hardware in Elsmere, where he remained for many years. Not long after the death of his wife, he left the hardware business and began semi-retirement, occasionally delivering flowers part-time, which he enjoyed.
Bob loved to go dancing, to fly stunt kites, and to watch and play sports. He enjoyed music, especially singing, and was a member of the Virginia all-state high school chorus in his youth. He coached his son's soccer teams and when his daughter became a cheerleader, attended every game and competition. In recent years, he enjoyed spending time with his daughter's English Bulldog, Bert. Most of all, Bob was a devoted father and husband who loved and cared for his family. He was kind-hearted, gentle, and was described as a "character" by many people he met throughout his life.
He is survived by his son, Daniel C. Smith, and wife, Julia K. Burzon of Crofton, MD; his daughter, Laura Ann McLaren, and husband, Michael McLaren of Wilmington, DE; and his grandchildren, Willow Ann Burzon Smith and Sky Bennett Burzon Smith.
