Salvatore R. "Sal" Onesi Jr. Obituary
Salvatore R. Onesi, Jr.

AGE: 58 • Newark

Salvatore (Sal) Robert Onesi, Jr., 58 of Newark, DE passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, February 23, 2014.

Sal was born on June 1, 1955 in Wilmington, DE to the late Salvatore and Laura (Eupizi) Onesi. He graduated from Conrad High School in 1973 and went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a specialty in Accounting and Finance from Goldey Beacom College where he was an active member of the Sigma Delta Rho fraternity. Sal was employed by several financial institutions throughout Delaware and also worked at the Au Claire School in Delaware City. He was ultimately employed by the State of Delaware, serving as an accountant at the state hospital campus.

Sal adored his family and spent many hours playing cards and board games and simply enjoyed having conversation with his relatives - both young and old. Time spent with his family was his favorite pastime. Sal loved watching sports and would be quick to complain about professional athletes' salaries when they would under-perform for their respective teams. Sal was known as a history buff - being very knowledgeable on any of the US wars, especially the two World Wars. He was drawn to the History Channel and read various books on the subject. He also liked to learn about and discuss Greek and Roman mythology. Sal also had a great interest in movies - namely Star Trek, western and action films. His enthusiasm for these topics often led to many "discussion groups" at the Newark Senior Center. His desire to read and learn would draw him to the senior center's library on an almost daily basis. He truly enjoyed the time he spent at the senior center, embracing the relationships and activities that it had provided. Gentle-hearted and kind, Sal will always be remembered as someone who always had a good thing to say about everyone that he knew. He was always willing to lend a hand, listen, and provide advice to anyone in need.

Sal is survived by his brother, Settimio (Sam) Onesi and his wife, Catherine E.; his sisters, Rose Oakes and Carla Maciag-Smith and her husband, Mark; his sister-in-law, Catherine L. Onesi; his nieces, Laura Ann Mattai and her husband, Scott, Kristen Liberati and her husband, Steve, Angela Oakes, Elizabeth Onesi, Marissa Onesi, Natalie Onesi, Emily Maciag and Stephanie Maciag; his nephews, Eric Onesi, Joseph Oakes, Nicholas Maciag, Anthony Onesi, Alex Onesi and Aaron Onesi; his grand-nephews, Cole, Dominic, Leo and Chase and his grand-niece, Gianna.

In addition to his parents, Sal was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Onesi in 2007.

Family and Friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, DE on Monday, March 3, 2014 from 6:00pm-8:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Angels Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 10:00am. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Newark Senior Center, 200 Whitechapel Drive, Newark, DE 19713 or to The Saint Rita Shrine, Cascia, Italy, via Sam Onesi, 211 Benjamin Boulevard, Bear, DE 19701.
