John "Harry" Knox

AGE: 87 • Wilmington, DE

On Saturday, March 1, 2014, John "Harry" Knox passed away peacefully with his family beside him at Compassionate Care Hospice. Harry was born and raised in Wilmington's Forty Acres on September 14, 1926 to Catherine and Joseph W. Knox.

Harry attended Wilmington High School prior to serving his country in World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Upon returning home, he continued his education, receiving his Bachelor's Degree from LaSalle University and then his Master's from the University of Delaware. He was employed as an educator in the Colonial School District until his retirement in 1984. Harry was also a football referee, officiating both high school and college games for 29 years.

Harry was an avid sports fan, who loved the Eagles, Phillies and Notre Dame football, but was truly devoted to watching his grandchildren's games. He loved summer vacations with his family at the Delaware beaches. He also enjoyed trips to Florida with his wife and more recently going to Spring training with his grandchildren in Clearwater, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Joseph, a son-in-law, Eugene Callaghan, III and his beloved wife, Joan Monigle. He is survived by his sister, Mary McGuinness, his sons, Joseph Knox (Gretchen) of Natick, MA, and Christopher Knox (Heddi Mitchell), his daughters, Mary Ann Callaghan and Caroline Burns (Joseph), all of Wilmington. Additionally, he is survived by nine grandchildren, Emma and David Knox, Reese and Connor Knox, Danny, Kelsey, and Shawn Callaghan, and Harrison and Jack Burns.

The family would like to thank Compassionate Care Hospice for their respectful and thoughtful care of Harry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am on Friday, March 7 at St. Ann's RC Church, 2013 Gilpin Avenue, Wilmington, 19806. Visitation will be on Friday from 9:30 am to 11 am at the Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Avenue, 19806. Burial will be in Cathedral Cemetery.
