James J. Gallagher, M.D.

AGE: 92 • Greenville

Passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at his residence in the Stonegates community.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Gallagher was the son of the late James J. and Elizabeth (Jaeger) Gallagher. He was a graduate of St. Joseph Preparatory School, St. Joseph College and Jefferson Medical College. He interned at Philadelphia General Hospital. An Army veteran of World War II, he met his wife when he was a medical officer in the occupation of Germany. She had fled her native Estonia after the first brutal Russian occupation and before the second imminent occupation.

After his discharge, Dr. Gallagher started a general practice in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia. He then moved to Wilmington where he practiced for 30 years. He was a former Chief of Urology at Wilmington Medical Center, now Christiana Care, where he is on the honorary staff and at St. Francis Hospital where he is emeritus. He served on the Board of Easter Seals and was a member of the Wilmington Country Club where he enjoyed golf, tennis and squash for many years.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Kaia; his daughter, Kaia Nutting and her husband, Paul, and their children, Kaia, Jr. and Paul Jr. of Denver; his son, Jim and life partner, Babette of Milwaukee; his daughter, Tina Messing and her husband, Mark, and their son, Mark Jr. of Philadelphia; his son, Michael and his son, Priidik of Tartu, Estonia; and his daughter, Lisa, who resides at the Mary Campbell Center in Wilmington.

Burial and funeral service will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Mary Campbell Center, 4641 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE 19803.
