Age 89, of Wilmington, DE., was peacefully called home by the Lord on Friday, March 14, 2014. Born in Yorklyn, DE., on April 16, 1924, John was the son of the late Aloysius and Marie (McGovern) Dolan.
He was a veteran of World War II where he served on the USS WASP (CV 18, the Mighty Stinger) from 1943 to 1946 as a Radarman Second Class. He was a Plank Owner as a member of the original crew which commissioned the ship. The WASP served in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations and earned 8 battle stars. John and his 3 brothers served in World War II in different branches of the service at the same time.
After the war, John earned an Associate's Degree in Business Administration at Goldey-Beacom College using the GI Bill. He worked at the Wilmington Housing Authority from 1958 to 1992 where he retired as the Director of Finance. On January 20, 1992 the Board of Commissioners of the Wilmington Housing Authority adopted resolution NO. 92-9, which included: "WHEREAS John Dolan throughout his career conducted himself with the highest ethical standards and dignity". John was a Violinist Extraordinaire and over the years played with the Wilmington Symphony, Hercules Orchestra, DuPont Chamber Orchestra, Delaware Chamber Orchestra, Brandywine Pops Orchestra, Immaculata College Community Orchestra, and the Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra. He enjoyed volunteering his musical talents at the Helen Graham Cancer Center and Kentmere Nursing Home, among others. Additionally, John was an accomplished artist studying oil painting under noted local artist, Edward Loper, Sr. at the Delaware Art Museum.
John is predeceased by his loving wife of 51 years, Eleanora C. (Curren) Dolan, his parents, and brothers Charles and Paul Dolan. John is survived by his children: Catherine "Kit" (Dolan) Adelizzi (Ray), Sheila (Dolan) Shannon (Marty), Sean Dolan (Nancy), Eileen (Dolan) Givler (Rick), and Jaime Dolan (Angie), and a brother, Francis J. Dolan. John is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Friends and family are invited to visitation on Tuesday, March 18th, between 6 and 8 PM at Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 19th 10:30 AM at St. Joseph's on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville.
