Mary Virginia Caffrey Obituary
Mary Virginia Caffrey

AGE: 101 • Wilmington

Mary Virginia Caffrey, age 101, died on March 26, 2014. Born on July 22, 1912 in Seymour, Indiana, she was the daughter of Fred C. Mitchell and Leota Henderson Mitchell. At the age of 3, she moved with her family to Crothersville, Indiana. She was educated in Crothersville schools and graduated from Crothersville High School in 1930. A talented pianist who played by ear, Virginia and 3 high school friends formed a combo with saxophone, banjo, drums and piano. They entertained movie-goers during intermission and at the end of silent movies shown in their local movie theater. Each musician earned 50 cents per performance, plus a free movie ticket. Virginia also was the piano accompanist for her high school glee club and chorus.

Following high school, Virginia worked for the American Medical Association in Chicago. In 1932 she met her future husband, Edward R. Caffrey of Newark, NJ, on a blind date when he was visiting Indianapolis on business. After their marriage in 1933, they came to Wilmington, Delaware, where Edward joined the Economist's Office of E.I. duPont de Nemours. They enjoyed 53 years together until Edward's death in 1986. During her early years in Wilmington, Virginia furthered her education by joining the Delphian Society, studying the classics. She had a keen interest in genealogy and spent many hours researching the history of her family at the Library of Congress and the Church of Latter Day Saints. Always active in the life of her community, she was a Girl Scout and Brownie leader, and also worked with the Cub Scouts. Virginia was a member of The League of Women Voters and the Newark Senior Center's world affairs discussion group. Lively-minded and well-read into her 90s, she remained intensely interested in politics and insisted on voting in every election, the last in 2010, at age 98.

Virginia Caffrey is survived by her three children: Barbara Faulhaber of Wilmington, DE, John Caffrey and his wife, Helen of Gulf Breeze, FL, and Terry Arney and her husband, Jack of Villanova, PA; 10 grandchildren: Mary Camac, Karl Faulhaber, Amy Haddow and her partner, Daniel Riley Burns, Suzanne Warren and her husband, David, Michael Faulhaber, Keri Caffrey, Daun Caffrey and his wife, Kathy, Pamela Suplee, John Arney, and Edward Arney; 12 great grandchildren: Kristin Norquest and her husband, Douglas, Drew Faulhaber, Lauren and Emily Camac, Tyler and Matthew Haddow, Julia and Garrett Warren, Audrey and Alena Faulhaber, Jordan and Leo Arney; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
