Walter S. Wonchoba, Jr.

AGE: 81 • Newark

Walter S. Wonchoba, Jr., age 81, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 6, 2014.

Born in Berkley, MA on July 26, 1932, Walter was the son of the late Walter S. Wonchoba and Marie Pucek Overlock. He bravely served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War aboard the destroyer USS Coolbaugh and the carrier, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He worked as a laboratory technician for the DuPont Company and was employed at the Chestnut Run site for 35 years until his retirement.

Walter was a 55 year member of the St. John's Lodge No. 2 A.F. & A.M. in New Castle. A leader in the Masonic community, he was a past Master and also served as a Grand Instructor for 25 years. He was instrumental in the construction of the new lodge hall, where he was past president of the New Castle Masonic Hall Company. Additionally, Walter served as a Worthy Patron for the Eastern Star Caesar Rodney Chapter #8, where he was a member for over 40 years. In his leisure time, he enjoyed gardening and tending to his yard and became an avid reader later in life. He was an exceptional handyman, who could build or fix anything that was asked of him. Above all else, Walter was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather who adored spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his beloved wife, Virginia D. Moore Wonchoba and a brother, Donald Wonchoba. Walter is survived by his children, James Meany and wife Donna of Wilmington, DE, Cheryl Kitchen and husband Jeff of Pike Creek, DE and Walter S. Wonchoba III and wife Gail of Lincoln University, PA; brothers, Edward Wonchoba and wife Helen of Wilmington, DE and William Wonchoba of Millsboro, DE; sisters, Marilyn Dwelley and husband Norman and Carol Madden, all of FL; grandchildren, Kim (Tim), Jeff (Lauren), Todd, Michelle, Kyle and Kevin; sister-in-law, Shirley Broadbent; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Friday evening, April 11, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday morning, April 12, 2014, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
