Mary Kay Helmer

AGE: 86 • Wilmington

Mary Catherine (Mary Kay) Helmer, age 86 of Wilmington, DE, passed away on April 19, 2014 surrounded by her family.

She was born on June 29, 1927 in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late Terrence and Catherine Relihan.

Mary Kay graduated from Annunciation High School in Pittsburgh in 1945 and briefly worked as a telephone operator. On Feb. 12, 1947, Mary Kay married George Helmer of Sewickley, PA at The Church of the Annunciation in Pittsburgh. Before George's death in 2012, the couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Mary Kay and her young family moved to Delaware in 1954 when George found work at a Delaware City oil refinery. She was a devoted parishioner of St. John the Beloved Catholic Church in Wilmington for 60 years, since the parish's founding.

There was nothing as warm as her smile for her family; and to have the little ones around was a light in her life. A woman of unwavering faith and Irish pride, Mary Kay was an inspiration whose most cherished possessions included a variety of rosary beads, at least one of which was always within reach.

She is survived by her children, Susan E. Helmer, Ronald G. Helmer (Jackie), Catherine L. Rizzo (Ron), M. Diane Hall, and Paul W. Helmer; her grandchildren: Douglas Rossello, Julia Adams (Todd), April Hall (Peter), Lauren Helmer, Jeffrey Hall (Keira), Stephanie Hall, and Katie Hall; and her great-grandchildren: Shawn and Eric Rossello; Andrew and Colin Hall; Aubrey, Samantha and Natalie Trotta; Rachel, Sarah and Kayla Adams; Daniel and Lillian Hall; and Jaxson and Haven Brown.

In addition to her husband, George, she was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Mavilla.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2014, from 5:00-7:00pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 10:00am at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The , 92 Reads Way, #205, New Castle, DE 19720 or St. John the Beloved Catholic Church, 907 Milltown Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808.
