Orin W. Marks

Orin W. Marks, 85, of Wilmington passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 26, 2014. Orin was born in Sterling, CO., to the late Walter and Esther Marks. He graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering. After college he was drafted by the US Army, to serve his country during the Korean War. During this time, he met his wife, Jane and shared 61 years of wonderful marriage.

Orin worked as a Development Engineer for Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY., and earned his PE license in 1957. Subsequently, he was hired by Hercules in Bacchus, UT., to perform development work on rocket fuel propellants. Later, he was transferred to the Research Center where he was promoted to Research Mathematician. Orin is noted as one of the early pioneers of applying computer programming for calculations involving thermodynamic properties and specific impulses of rocket fuels. At the same time, he also served as the Company's Systems Analyst and received his MS degree in Mathematics from the University of Delaware. In 1999, he retired from Hercules after 41 years of dedicated service.

Orin was an avid reader of science fiction. He enjoyed skiing, jogging on the beach at Cape May and loved to solve both hand and mind puzzles. He was a member of the American Rocket Society and Association for Computer Machinery. Orin was an active participant in the American Legion Post 18, where he served in several positions including Post Commander. He also performed volunteer work at the VA hospital in Elsmere.

Besides his wife, Jane; Orin is survived by children, Rebecca (Gordon), Ron (Karen) and Randy (Diane); brothers, Keith (Judy) and Don (MaryAnn); sister, Dorothy (Don); grandchildren, Jamie, Jason, Christine, Kimberly and William. Also left to cherish his memory are numerous nieces and nephews.

The Family will receive friends, starting at 10:00 am Thursday May 1, 2014, immediately preceding the Funeral Service which will begin at 11:00 am. The viewing and service will be held at Concord Presbyterian Church, 1800 Fairfax Blvd., Wilmington, DE 19803. Interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery with a reception back at Concord Presbyterian.
