George Edward Irwin, 90, of Oaks, PA, died on Friday, April 25, 2014 at home. He was a long-time resident of Oaks, PA, and was born in Conshohocken, PA, where he was a star athlete, lettering in football, basketball and track. He rose to the rank of Eagle Scout, and in later years was a mentor for future Eagle Scouts. He proudly served his country in World War II. He attained the rank of Seaman First Class in the United States Coast Guard and earned seven battle stars for assault landings he participated in during the War of the Pacific to include Kwajalein Atoll, Saipan Island, Leyte Island and Iwo Jima. He was employed for many years with Alan Wood Steel in Conshohocken, and then became an independent contractor. He built both of his homes, and helped his daughters re-model their first homes. He greatly enjoyed fishing, handicapping the "ponies," gardening, creating wooden folk art, and following the Phillies. He lived independently until he was 90 years old, and was a "Mr. Fix-It" up until the end. He will be missed by his family and friends.
He is pre-deceased by his parents, William and Lillian Irwin of Conshohocken, and is survived by his daughter, Ruth Irwin, son-in-law, Pete Fedorkowicz of Bear, DE; his daughter, Nancy E. Irwin of Rising Sun, MD, as well as his long-time companion, Gwen Parkin, and his former wife, Betty Irwin of Bear DE.
Relatives and Friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service in Green Tree Church of the Brethren, 1078 Egypt Road, Oaks, PA, on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held in the church on Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. In a private ceremony, his ashes will be buried in Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
