Dorothy Alice Ouellette "Dotty" Crane

Dorothy Alice Ouellette "Dotty" Crane, age 93, of West Grove, PA, formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed peacefully away on May 9, 2014. Born in Portland, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Romeo and Geneva (Phinney) Ouellette.
Dotty graduated from Madison High School in Madison, Maine. She went on to receive a BA in Government from the University of Maine in 1943 where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and the prestigious All Maine Women. It was also at the University of Maine that Dotty met her husband, Talbot "Ick" Crane.
During World War II, she served as the Personnel Assistant for Northeast Airlines at Logan Airport, Boston, Massachusetts. She was responsible for interviewing and hiring all personnel except pilots, often traveling to New York and Montreal in the course of her work. Following the War and Ick's return to the States in 1946, Dotty and Ick were married and moved to Boston where he attended school and she raised baby Nancy. In August 1948, they moved to Wilmington, DE, where their other three children were born.
In the 1960's she returned to college, taking graduate courses in child development at the University of Delaware. Dorothy was a substitute teacher at area public schools and was hired by Tower Hill School to teach Kindergarten in the fall of 1964. While still teaching Kindergarten, she returned again to college and earned her psychometrist certificate. She conducted admissions testing for Tower Hill School. After 20 years, she retired from the Kindergarten and continued in the testing role for another 15 years, retiring from Tower Hill School with 35 years of service in 1999. In addition to her passion for teaching, she also loved animals, genealogy research and adding to her extensive collection of antique stereo views, specializing in Maine scenes.
Dorothy was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in Delaware, St. Alban's Episcopal Church, and the American Association of University Women. She also belonged to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and served as the president of the Delaware affiliate organization.
Dorothy was predeceased by her daughter, Nancy Lynch Crane.
Family was everything to Dotty, and she passed this love on to her four children. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Talbot H. Crane; two daughters, Cinda J. Crane and husband Jack Briggs of Wilmington, and Jane Ellen Neubig and husband Thomas Neubig of Annandale, VA; son John Crane of Greensboro, NC; son-in-law Harold Lynch of West Grove, PA; and sister-in-law Janice Jacobs of Hampden, Maine. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Jennifer Reeves (Glenn) Gerson, Christopher (Sabrina) Reeves, Jennifer (Carl Wellington) Briggs, Brian Briggs, Emily Neubig, Alicia Neubig, Stephen Neubig, Nicholas Crane, Madison Crane, and four great-grandchildren: Samuel, Sarah, Amy, and Jadacie.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 13, at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 401 North Union Street, Kennett Square, PA, at 3:00 PM. Reception to follow at the church.
