Richard G. Wittmeyer, Sr.

AGE: 90 • Wilmington

Richard G Wittmeyer, Sr., 90, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home on May 10, 2014. Richard was born in Burlington, NJ., in December 1923 the son of the late Oscar Wittmeyer, Jr. and Mary (Graham) Wittmeyer.

During World War II, Richard served in the United States Army Air Corps 2nd Air Force. Upon leaving military service, Richard attended Rider University in Trenton, NJ. Richard took a position with J. B. VanSciver Company in Camden, NJ.,and transferred to Delaware to open the Wilmington, DE., location where he worked in management until June 1983. He then worked for the next 10 years for Brooks Armored Car Service until he retired. Richard was active with the Boy Scouts of America for 15 years serving as Assistant Scout Master for Troop 527 and a member of the Silvercroft Lions Club. He was also a member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Wilmington, DE for over 50 years.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth (Ferschke) Wittmeyer and his sister Anne Fennell. He will be missed by their five children, Sarah Curry, Maureen (Kay) Gartner (J. Carlton Gartner, MD), Rebecca (Becky) Vye (H. Kemp Vye), Richard Wittmeyer, Jr. (Maria Wittmeyer), and Philip Wittmeyer; and 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Service on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 1:30 pm at St. David's Episcopal Church at 2320 Grubb Road, Wilmington, DE. Interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory may be made to St. David's Episcopal Church, 2320 Grubb Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
