John V. Maliszewski

AGE: 87 • Wilmington

On May 9, 2014, John Valentine Maliszewski (age 87) of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his children.

The son of the late John W. and Catherine Maliszewski, John was born in Wilmington and attended Brown Vocational High School. He joined the US Navy at the age of seventeen, was an Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class and a gunner, flying in the PB4Y-2. He spent eight months overseas and was honorably discharged in 1945 with an Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two stars, an American Theater Ribbon, a World War II Victory Medal, an Air Medal, and aircraft insignia with three stars.

After learning technical drafting at Drexel Institute of Technology, John worked for National Vulcanized Fiber, then for ILC Industries, where he contributed to the company's production of space suits for NASA astronauts in the Apollo program. Later, John worked at Delcastle High School where he was a coordinator of the vocational training program and retired in 1991.

With his father-in-law, John built the house that he and his growing family would live in for over five decades. Through the years John had hobbies that ranged from fresh water fishing, bird watching, and model trains, to woodworking, hiking, photography, and stamp collecting.

John was predeceased by his first daughter, Susan, and his wife, Irene. He will be dearly missed by his children Christopher, Mary Kate (James and children, Aaron and Amanda), Andrew (son Sam), Margaret (Bill), and Matthew (Kelly), and by his sister, Betty Dixon. His children are so very grateful for his caregivers at Churchman Village where he spent his final years.

Family and friends may visit with his family on Wednesday, May 14 from 6 - 8 PM at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 15 at 10:30 AM. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery.
