Richard ("Dick") P. Reed, age 92, of Wilmington, Delaware died suddenly on May 9, 2014. He was a devoted husband and father and a champion for the poor and less fortunate.
Dick graduated from Salesianum High School. He went on to earn an associate degree from Goldey-Beacom College and a bachelor's degree in horticulture from the University of Delaware, where he also was a member of the varsity basketball team. His college career was interrupted for two years while serving in the Army Air Corps (now the U.S. Air Force). After graduating from college, he spent his entire career working for Hercules and retired 30 years ago.
He was a faithful and devout Catholic. He grew up in St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Union Park Gardens, and then spent the last 60 years as an active member of St. Mary Magdalen Church, where he attended mass daily, served as a Eucharistic minister, and called Bingo games.
Every Thanksgiving, he volunteered at the Ministry of Caring Emanuel Dining Room. At age 92, he was still transporting cancer patients to appointments for the American Cancer Society.
He was active in sports his entire life. He was a member of various local tennis leagues and played in the Delaware Senior Olympics. He also was an active member in the Brandywine Badminton Club. In 2012, at age 90, he earned a silver medal in badminton at the National Senior Olympics held in Houston, Texas. He was an avid runner and for many years ran in the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sara Reed and is survived by his children Kate Gavron and husband Michael of Oak Hill, Virginia, Martha Carrington and husband Ted of Dallas, Texas, Richard Reed of Wilmington, and Christopher Reed and wife Jennifer of Fairhill, Maryland, and three grandchildren, Brian and Lisa Gavron and Benjamin Carrington.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 15, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, Delaware. Additional viewing will be Friday, May 16, from 9:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Friday, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Mary Magdalen Church, 7 Sharpley Road, Wilmington, Delaware. Interment will follow at Saint Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to St. Mary Magdalen Church, 7 Sharpley Road, Wilmington, Delaware, 19803 or to the Ministry of Caring Inc., 506 N. Church Street, Wilmington, Delaware, 19801.
