Shirley S. Bancroft

AGE: 84 • Wilmington

Shirley Simonton Bancroft (Sis to everyone), age 84, died May 13, 2014 at the Country House surrounded by loving family, including her devoted husband of 52 years, Lewis (Lew), after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Sis was born in Wilmington, Delaware to Fagan H. Simonton Sr. and Irene Van Kirk Simonton. She graduated from Wilmington Friends School (K-12), Lasell Junior College, and Syracuse University (BS). Sis worked briefly in New York City and then in Wilmington for DuPont's Textile Fibers Department.

In 1953, Sis married a Naval Officer, Ralph Foster, and spent several years at Yale University while Ralph received his PhD degree. She had three children and Ralph died of leukemia in 1958.

In 1962, Sis married Lewis Bancroft, an Andover/Princeton alumnus, with three children and proceeded to even up the gender by having two more boys.

She was very active in tennis, paddle tennis, squash racquets, golf and skiing. She won the first ladies putting contest at Wilmington Country Club and became the first woman president of the Friends School Alumni Association.

Her children are Donald Foster (Shelly), twins Fay Foster Felty (Jeff) and Patty Foster Fosselman (Bruce), Thomas "Ned" Bancroft (Bonnie), and Jay Bancroft (Lanie). Her step-children are Steve Bancroft (Mary Alice), Ellen Bancroft and Betsey Bancroft Wu (Yue). Sis and Lew have twelve grandchildren and are proudest of the fifteen college degrees of their own children.
