Florence Martin D'Onofrio, R.N.

AGE: 91 • Wilmington

Our much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died peacefully with her loving husband by her side on May 23, 2014, at the Kentmere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, her residence since January.

Florence ("Flo") was born in Wilmington to Ethel Stewart Martin and G. William Martin. She was a 1940 graduate of Wilmington High School and a 1943 graduate of The Delaware Hospital School of Nursing. After receiving her degree, she was employed by Bellanca Aircraft in New Castle, DE, as the Plant Nurse, where she met and married Maurice P. D'Onofrio. She continued her nursing career at the Delaware Hospital until the early 1950's; and from 1971 to 1991, Flo was a geriatric nurse at Longwood Villa in Boothwyn, PA.

Flo loved gardening, identifying and feeding her backyard birds, family vacations at the beach, listening to music, and was a voracious reader, often reading a book a day until the loss of her eyesight. She especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren.

Flo is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Maurice, their children Paula Garrison, Linda Wolf of Chesapeake City, David D'Onofrio, Christine Hamilton, Carol Martinez and her husband Peter; grandchildren Julie Garrison Long, Alison Wolf, Robert Garrison, Kelley D'Onofrio, Max Martinez, Laura D'Onofrio and Evan Martinez; and great-grandchildren Michael and Mason D'Onofrio McKenney. She is also survived by special family friend Brenda Walter. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Dr. G William Martin, Jr. and Robert S. Martin, and her granddaughter Claire Martinez.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the kind and caring staff at Kentmere and to the caregivers who assisted her at home.

Respecting Flo's wishes, there will be no visitation or graveside services, but to honor her memory, donations may be made to Delaware Technical Community College, c/o The Nursing Scholarship Endowment, 400 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713.
