Andrew Joseph Sabatino

Andrew Joseph Sabatino, Sr. passed away peacefully on Saturday May 24, 2014 at the age of 92. He was a resident of Millcroft Senior Living in Newark, formerly Clermont, FL for eight years and New Castle, DE for more than 40 years. He was born in Brighton, MA and raised in Wilmington, DE, ,the son of the late Joseph and Angela (Cerminera) Sabatino, and husband of the late Annabella Rose (Bernardo) Sabatino.

After graduating from Wilmington High School, Andy worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a machinist. He then enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving active duty in W.W. II from 1943-1946. Lt. Andrew Sabatino then reenlisted in the Air Force Reserve from 1951-1953 stationed at New Castle County Airport, achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After the service, Andy worked for many years as an insurance agent for Conly, Mills & Rossiter on Washington Street, until he purchased the business in the late 70's. In 1985, he retired from Sabatino Insurance Agency and began making his hobbies of woodworking and gardening his full time pleasures. Andy was best known for his kind-hearted nature and wonderful sense of humor. He always had a funny story to tell at parties or family gatherings, typically about growing up on Justison Street. A man of great faith, he raised his family as members of Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church in New Castle, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and Lay Reader.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory six children, Andy Sabatino Jr. and his wife Marie of Clermont, FL; Ann Hardy and her husband Rick of Bear, DE; Carolyn Morris and her husband Quinn of Greenville, NC; Marie Binning and her husband Brian, of Newark, DE; Thomas Sabatino of Newark, DE and Joseph Sabatino and his wife Sherri, of Wilmington, DE. He also leaves a sister, Theresa Vavala of Wilmington, DE. Andrew was also the proud grandfather of ten and great-grandfather of three.

The Family wishes to express their thanks to the Millcroft staff for their exceptional care, as well as Vitas Hospice staff and volunteers for their care, compassion and loving presence during Andrew's last year of life.

Funeral Services will be celebrated on Tuesday June 3rd at 12:30 pm at Beeson Funeral Home of Newark, 2053 Pulaski Hwy, Newark, DE where family and friends may visit from 10:30 to 12:30pm. Committal Services will be at 2:00pm in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to VITAS Hospice Care, 100 Commerce Dr. #302 Newark, DE 19713.
