Rita M. Claricurzio

AGE: 69 • Hockessin

Rita M. Claricurzio, age 69 of Hockessin, DE, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Thursday evening, May 29, 2014.

Rita was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 6, 1945, daughter of the late Joseph and Celia (Stango) Ucciferro. She was a devoted wife, award winning educator, and an inspiring cheerleader to all whom she encountered. Rita met the love of her life, Otto, her husband of 47 years, at the University of Delaware. It is there where she discovered her "gift" of teaching and inspiring others. Being a member of the Varsity Cheerleading squad highlighted her love of life and passion for her beloved Blue Hens.

Rita faithfully taught mathematics in the New Castle County Vo-Tech School district for 32 years. She earned teacher of the year in 1989 at Delcastle Technical High School and was the Head of the Math department for many years. Her love of teaching did not stop with the students as she spent her last few years in the district as a full time mentor for new teachers helping them hone their skills to inspire others.

Rita focused on three passions her entire life, her family, her friends, and her faith, as she was a member of the St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Hockessin, De. In addition to her husband, Otto, she is survived by her son, Joseph (Suzanne); grandchildren Michael and Giulianna; son Michael (Susan); grandchildren Jacob, Ana, and Kristina; daughter Jenna C. Lucey (Mark); granddaughters Celia and Ella; her brother Joseph Ucciferro (Denise); and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Eric Martin and the entire staff of the Helen Graham Cancer Center, the doctors and nurses of the Medical ICU unit of Christiana Care and the staff of Seasons Hospice for their loving care of Rita.

Family and friends may visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road Pike Creek, on Tuesday, June 3rd, from 4pm to 8pm, and on Wednesday morning from 8:45am to 9:45am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, on Wednesday morning June 4th, at 10:30am.
