Matthew R. Kegelman, PhD

AGE: 85 • Wilmington

Matthew R. Kegelman, died at home peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, June 10, 2014.

He was born in Mahopac, NY, to the late Muriel (Brown) and Orlando Kegelman. At a young age, he won the Westinghouse National Science Award. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Fordham University, with a doctorate in organic chemistry at the age of 25. He moved to Wilmington, DE, where he started his 38-year career with the DuPont Company. Along the way he obtained the position of Senior Research Associate and was granted several patents.

Matthew was a duplicate contract bridge Life Master. He enjoyed classical music, skiing, and was an avid tennis player and lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. Many weeks of family vacations were enjoyed at Cape Cod, Massachusetts and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Connelly Kegelman. The entire family celebrated their 60th anniversary this past October. An excellent provider, Matthew valued his family above all else.

Matthew is also survived by his 10 children and their spouses, John Kegelman, Matthew and Mary N. Kegelman, Jerry and Mary C. Kegelman, Joseph and Alissa Kegelman, Thomas and Kimberly Kegelman, Mary and Frank Bellomo, Christine and Michael Smith, Bernadette Kegelman, James and Natalie Kegelman, Daniel and Karen Kegelman; his sister, Muriel Radlhammer, his cousin Marie Louise Rossi, 20 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also preceded in death by his grandson Cody and daughter-in-law Susan.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 13, from 11am -12:45pm, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Rd, Wilmington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be follow promptly at 1:00pm. Burial will be at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church Cemetery, Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Matthew's name to Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21297-0303.
