Ethredge Wayne Lemons, age 83, of Wilmington, Delaware, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, June 10, 2014.
Born in 1931 in Gravelly, Arkansas, Wayne was the first child of James Ethredge and Moliccie Lemons.
Wayne grew up in Gravelly, attending Fourche Valley public schools and graduating in 1948. He enrolled at the University of Arkansas, receiving his bachelor's degree from the Department of Agriculture in 1952 and his Masters degree in Entomology in 1954. He began his work career as assistant professor of Entomology at the University Arkansas's Monticello Campus. In 1956, he joined the Agricultural Chemicals Department of Hercules, Inc. There, his career positions included Director of Marketing for Agricultural Chemicals, Interim Director of Corporate Communications, and Director of Corporate Advertising. He retired from Hercules in 1990 as Director of International Marketing. In 1991, Wayne was appointed by Governor Michael Castle as Director of the Delaware State Lottery. In this capacity, he served a term as President of the Multi-State Lottery Association, and he was on the board of the National Association of State and Provincial Lotteries. Wayne continued to serve as Lottery Director for Governors Carper, Minner, and Markell. He retired in September 2011.
Wayne married Janet Manville in 1960. He was a long-term member of both Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as Deacon and Head Usher, and Greenville Country Club, where he served on the board.. He also served on the boards of Wilmington Friends School and Burton House.
Wayne is survived by his wife Janet, his daughter Martha A. Lemons Sherrill, son David W. Lemons, grandchildren James E. and Sydney A. Lemons, son-in-law H. Sinclair Sherrill, and two brothers, Ronald of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Rick of Mound, Oklahoma. Wayne was predeceased by his parents, his sister Melba, and his brother James.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 West 13th Street, Wilmington, DE. Interment will be private.
