Joseph "Chip" Vaccarino, age 68, of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, died on Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE. Chip was a great and gentle man, husband, father, grandfather, educator and friend. Every experience he shared with us radiated brightly his cheer, compassion and unforgettable good will.
Chip graduated from Lafayette High School as an All City Athlete. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Delaware in June 1970. He then went on to earn his Master's Degree plus 45 in Education from Wilmington College in May 1992. Chip began his career in education working at Govenor Bacon Health Center. He transferred in 1982 to Delcastle Technical High School where he taught Science until he retired in 2008. He was the head coach of the Football and Basketball team and Assistant Coach to the Track team until 1999. He continued his love of football by being an Assistant Football Coach at Mount Pleasant High School. Many of his players have been quoted saying "Coach Vac was both a coach, a great man, and a friend." , "He taught me respect was earned through hard work and dedication both on and off the field." , "He was a great influence in all aspects of life. " , "He had a vested interest in all of his players as young men first, players second."
Chip enjoyed all sports since his days of playing football on the field of the University of Delaware from 1967 - 1969. In '68 & '69 their team won Mid Atlantic Conference and Boardwalk Bowl under the leadership of Coach Tubby Raymond. In 2010, he was inducted into the Manlius Pebble Hill School Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1963 Red Knights Football Team
Chip is survived by his wife of 44 years, Terry Durham Vaccarino of Wilmington DE; son, Ryan Vaccarino, his wife, Christine Vaccarino, their children, Maya Grebler, Amelia Vaccarino and Ethan Vaccarino, of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Kara Vaccarino, her fiancé Antonio Phillips, and her children Haily Cerro, Kai Cerro, and Kaleb Phillips of Wilmington, DE; and his brother Skip Vaccarino, his wife Maria Vaccarino and their family of Ridgeway, NJ.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike (Rt. 202 S. of Silverside Rd.), Wilmington on Wednesday, July 2 from 7-9 pm. Overflow parking will be available at the Brandywine YMCA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered the following day, Thursday, July 3, at 11 am at Holy Child Catholic Church, 2500 Naamans Rd., Wilmington, DE. In keeping with Chip's wish to be cremated, there will be no burial following Mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Chip's honor to the Delaware Humane Society, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
