Francis T. Mooney, Sr.

AGE: 90 • Wilmington

Francis T. Mooney, Sr., age 90, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 3, 2014.

He was born in Wilmington on November 12, 1923, the son of the late Timothy J. and Alice M. (Haley) Mooney.

Frank proudly served in the US Army during WWII. Known at that time as "Little Tim," he gained notoriety as "Nine Lives Mooney" - an accomplished P-47 pilot who walked away from numerous damaged planes that were shot up by the enemy. This included rescuing an injured and downed allied pilot and flying him back into friendly territory.

Frank was a kind and giving soul with a happy- go-lucky temperament and could often be heard whistling one of his favorite tunes. He loved helping others and even in his 70's and 80's, would drive his church's "elderly" to their doctor appointments or around on their errands. He also spent many holidays with his wife Patty, serving at the Hope Dining Hall. He was a devoted father who worked hard and was always there for all of his family.

Frank will be tremendously missed on this earth, but we rejoice in his being with the Lord.

In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet, who passed away in 1984 after 38 years of marriage.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Patricia S. (Bunn); his children, Francis Timothy, Jr., "Tim" and Susan; his stepchildren, France, Chuck, Barbara, Teresa, Laura, Linda, Chris and Paula; 25 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
