Richard James Wegner, age 87 of Wilmington, Delaware died Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Christiana Hospital.

Dick was born in 1926 in El Dorado, Kansas, first son of Peter James and Cora Muriel DeArmond Wegner.

He received a BS in Chemistry from Kansas State University in 1950. In 1956, Dick earned a Master's Degree in Education and Psychology. Dick was selected two times as a third alternate to West Point. He taught science and mathematics and served as a guidance counselor in Kansas high schools.

Employed by IBM from 1957 to 1988, he was promoted throughout his career to lead the Federal Systems Division's Personnel Research efforts at Headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. He retired in 1989.

Dick found great joy with his family, camping, competing in the Senior Olympics in Maryland and Delaware, studying genealogy and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Rose LaVonne Lundquist Wegner; sons, Steven Lane of Wilmington and Kent Richard of Annapolis; daughter Diane LaVonne Chandler and husband Chad of Wilmington; brother Bernard Carl Wegner and wife Gail of Tahachapi, CA; great grandchildren, Ethan Ryan Wegner of Baltimore and Clara Elizabeth Brooks of Brooklyn, NY; grandchildren, Erin Elizabeth Brooks and husband Duncan of Brooklyn, NY, Ryan Matthew and wife Sona of Baltimore, Sarah LaVonne Ferrell and husband Jason of Media, PA, John Alex Hendrickson of Wilmington, Lindsey Calandra of Wyndmoor, PA, Tom Chandler and Phylicia Schwartz of Ashland, OR, Kristen Chandler (Jayven and Keyland Fedrick) of Wilmington, Kelsey Chandler of San Francisco, CA, and Sara Elizabeth Chandler of Wilmington.

He was predeceased by his brother, Peter Eugene Wegner and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Gandy Wegner.

Services will be held on Thursday, July 17 at 10:30 a.m. Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1120 Darley Road, Wilmington, DE 19810. Interment will follow at Lower Brandywine Cemetery, Greenville.
