Vincent A. Bifferato Obituary
Vincent A. Bifferato

Vincent A. Bifferato died on Friday, July 25, 2014 at the age of 77. He left this world peacefully and surrounded by his loving family in his Brandywine Hundred home of more than 45 years, after a long and courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

"Biff" as he was known to his friends, was the son of Italian immigrants, Luigi "Louis" and Carmella "Mary" Bifferato. Born June 12, 1937, he grew up in the Rose Hill area of New Castle, Delaware. He attended Salesianum School for Boys in Wilmington, where he was president of the 1955 Senior class. He then attended Villanova University, on an academic scholarship. While at Villanova, he managed the NIT Champion men's basketball team. Following his graduation from college, he married his high school sweetheart, Marie Connor in August 1959. He then attended Villanova University School of Law.

He began practicing law in Delaware in 1963, and he was elected to the State Legislature in 1964 where he served until 1966. While a member of the Legislature, he was proud to be the driving force behind the creation of Delcastle Park, which remains one of the most used and beautiful recreational centers in the state. After his time serving Delaware in the State Legislature, he Chaired the State Alcohol Control Commission. In 1968, he was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of the State of Delaware by Governor Charles L. Terry, a position that he held for the next 32 years. In 1992 he was appointed Resident Judge for New Castle County by Governor Mike Castle.

Affectionately known as "Judge Biff", he enjoyed the camaraderie of the other judges and the unique and diverse backgrounds of those who appeared before him. Judge Biff especially enjoyed mentoring young lawyers and those in law school. He served as an adjunct professor at Widener School of Law and began a program of free seminars for young lawyers, which later became known as the "Judge Vincent Bifferato Superior Court Trial Practice Forum."

After retiring from the Superior Court in 2000, he joined his two sons in private practice, focusing on alternative dispute resolution. In his retirement he quickly developed a passion for traveling to Italy. Before his death he had the opportunity to reconnect with his father's family nearly one-hundred years after his father immigrated to the United States. Despite his struggles with cancer he continued to travel to Italy, including a much cherished trip in 2012 when he took his entire family with him.

Biff is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Marie, their three children and spouses, and six grandchildren all in the Wilmington area: Vincent and Kelly Bifferato; Chip and Katy Connolly and their children Elizabeth, Caroline, and Gil; Connor and Karen Bifferato and their children Lilliana, Rocco, and Gianni. He is also survived by his sister Mickey Ciuffetelli and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, located at 901 N. Dupont St. Wilmington, Del. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make contributions are asked to consider the Sunday Breakfast Mission in Wilmington or the Ministry of Caring's Emmanuel Dining Room.
