Harold Leroy Pinkerton, Sr. Age 90, formerly of Llewellyn, PA went home on August 4, 2014. He was the son of Forrest and Nellie Peiffer Pinkerton and a graduate of Branch Township High School class of 1941. After graduation, he went to NYA School at Mauch Chunk, PA and worked at Bethlehem Steel as a lathe operator. Shortly after the U.S. entered WW2, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After Boot Camp he was sent to Great Lakes, Illinois for schooling. Harold was assigned to the Destroyer USS Caldwell #605 where he spent three years in the Pacific as a Machinist Mate second class. While on escort duty in the Philippines his ship was attacked by Kamikaze fighter planes killing 29 shipmates. He was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1947 he married the love of his life, Dorothy Buffington. He was a Block Operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad and retired from Amtrak in 1983.
He enjoyed fishing, boating, handy man projects and spending summers at the home he built on the Sassafras River at Gregg Neck in Maryland. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. His passion in retirement was genealogy.
Harold was a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy ;daughter, Dr. Sharon Pinkerton Wayland and her husband Philip; son, Harold Leroy Pinkerton, Jr. and his wife Denise; 2 grandsons, David and Forrest. He was predeceased by his brother, Lester; and 3 sisters, Kathryn Duncan, Betty Hendricks and Miriam Sheehan.
Graveside services will be celebrated on Friday, August 8th at 1:00 pm in Longwood Cemetery, 945 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Sq., PA.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Shopping Center, 2nd Floor, Newark, DE 19711.
