AGE: 93 • Formerly of Wilmington
Frances Kathryn Montgomery Joseph, formerly of Wilmington, died Thursday, August 14 in Richmond, Virginia, in the arms of her daughter. She was the widow of William B. Joseph, Jr. She was also predeceased by her son, William B. Joseph III, who died in 2011.
Born March of 1921, to Francis S. and Kathryn Wick Montgomery, Fran grew up in West Hartford and Stratford, Connecticut. She graduated with honors from Duke University in 1942 with a degree in chemistry and physics. She moved to Wilmington to work for the Fabrics and Finishes Division of the Dupont Company, where she was employed until 1956, when she became a fulltime mother and homemaker. Widowed in 1964 with two small children, Fran returned to school and obtained her Masters in Education from the University of Delaware. She taught fifth and fourth grades at Oak Grove (later Austin D. Balz) Elementary School in Elsmere from 1968 until her retirement in 1986. Fran was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, Delaware Mensa, AARP, and Elder Hostel until dementia limited her activities in her last years. Thanks to her son, Bill, she was able to live in her home near Newport until his death, when she moved into assisted living. She moved to Richmond, Virginia in 2012 to be near her daughter. Fran met life's challenges with intelligence, strength, and a sense of humor, which she kept until the end.
She is survived by her daughter, Ellen Joseph Wolf, of Richmond; and her grandson, Victor Joseph, of Newport.
Interment was held privately in Riverview Cemetery.
