Veronica M. Tusi

AGE: 72 • Wilmington

Passed away on Saturday, Aug. 16, after a short illness, surrounded by her loved ones in Christiana Hospital.

Roni was born in Wilmington on June 11, 1942. She was the eldest of nine Ritchie children, and the only one not counted as a "baby boomer." Her father, Arthur Sr., was a soldier in the Pacific theater of World War II; she met him in person only at age 3, after the war ended. Beloved of her mother Frances Harrity Ritchie, Roni was a devoted daughter, big sister, and role model. She was instrumental in keeping the family functioning and thriving after the sudden death of her father when she was just 15. She attended St. Thomas and Christ Our King parochial schools and she was a 1960 graduate of Padua Academy.

Roni and husband Ben, who tenderly called her "Murph," married in 1963. They were among the first residents of Glen Berne Estates, near Stanton, where she made a home for her family that was the center of everything. Their home was situated within a stone's throw of the homes of Ben's siblings, Fran and Mary, and their parents, Mario and Mary Tusi, who emigrated from Italy.

Roni was the office manager for Tusi Brothers, a well-known New Castle County electrical contracting company founded by her husband, Ben, and brother-in-law, Fran, 40 years ago. Her business and organizational skills were instrumental in establishing and sustaining the success of the firm.

Known for her dry, often deadpan wit, Roni mostly loved that her home was a place where her children and grandchildren still loved coming together every Sunday for pasta.

Roni is survived by her daughter, Christine Heesters (Nicholas) of Hockessin; and son Michael of Middletown. She was predeceased by her husband, Ben, who died in 2011 and her her first child, son Mario, who died in 2006. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren; Benjamin Tusi; Dominic and Ella Tusi; and Nicholas and Katherine Heesters. She also is survived by her sisters and their husbands; Mary Ellen and Jack Trzcinski of West Grove, Pa; Kathleen and John Oliver of Dagsboro; Paula and Larry Setting of Hockessin; her brothers and their wives, Arthur W. and Nancy Ritchie of Wilmington; Timothy and Petra Ritchie of Elkton, Md.; Michael Ritchie and McCrae Harrison of Wilmington; and Patrick and Deirdre Ritchie of Ashland; her brother- and and sister-in-law; Francis and Donna Tusi; and her sister-in-law Mary and brother-in-law Robert Ciritella of Wilmington. Roni had a huge family of nieces and nephews, who loved her and already miss her dearly.
