Susanne R. "Becky" McElwee, age 80 of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 1, 2014, surrounded by her family.
Becky was born on April 30, 1934 in Hockessin, DE, daughter of the late Alexander and Molly (Dixon) Jarrell. She and her 6 siblings grew up on their family's farm on Limestone Road.
Becky was a proud graduate of Conrad High School. She worked as an administrative assistant and after getting married to Charles W. McElwee and starting her family, returned to work as a paraprofessional with the Red Clay School District.
In her free time, Becky enjoyed bowling and even coached with the junior bowling program for 13 years. She was widely known as "Mrs. Softball", working for 30-plus years as the official scorekeeper for countless softball games played in the New Castle County area. She also volunteered with the Special Olympics of Delaware and was an avid Phillies and Sixers fan. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Becky is survived by her daughters, Sharon Bey (Thomas) and Susan Shockley; her grandchildren, Tina Lynn Shockley, Nicholas C. Bey and Aaron W. Bey; and her sister, Mary Louise Kolasinski.
In addition to her parents and late husband, Charles, she was preceded in death by her 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, September 4, 2014 from 5:00 - 7:00pm at the Doherty Funeral Homes, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, September 5, 2014 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 525 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, DE 19711. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Special Olympics Delaware, 619 S. College Ave, Newark, DE 19716.
