OUR BELOVED YIAYIA ERENE
Mrs. Erene Koumatos Mathews, Loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Aunt, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, passed into the loving arms of the Angels surrounding her on Friday afternoon, August 29, 2014.
Born in 1924 at Paralia Platanou, Ahaias, Greece, Erene was one of the eight children of George and Marguerita (Andrikopoulou) Koutsoukos. She was predeceased by her siblings Mr. Constantinos G. Koutsoukos, Ms. Helen Mackis, Dr. Alexios G. Koutsoukos, Ms. Eugenia Belales, and Ms. Argyroula Kotta. Her teenage and early adult years were spent, as was the custom, in contributing to the operation of her family's estate, and in protecting and caring for her younger siblings as well as those suffering in the ensuing famine of WW II. Upon the liberation of Greece, she was married to Daniel Koumatos Mathews in October of 1949 in Paralia Platanou, and joined her husband in Cleveland, Ohio where they established their home and family. In 1968, the family moved to Athens, Greece where Erene remained until the sudden demise of her husband in 1985. She then joined her children in Philadelphia and spent the remaining years of her life in the United States enjoying and caring for her family. She was a wise and gracious woman defined by her giving nature, dignified fortitude, and an infinite love of children.
She is survived by her Daughter and Son-in-Law, Dr. Ephigenia Koumatos Giannoukos and Dr. George D. Giannoukos, her five Grandsons, Demetrios, Dionysios, Stavros, Christopher and Paul Giannoukos, all of Kennett Square; her Son and Daughter- in-Law, Dr. Gerasimos Koumatos and Ms. Flora Katerlis-Koumatos, her two granddaughters, Eirene (Renee) Koumatos and Demetra Koumatos, of Moorestown New Jersey; her Brothers, Mr. Christos G. Koustoukos, of West Simsbury, Connecticut and Mr. Yiannis G. Koutsoukos of Brussels, Belgium, as well as several nieces and nephews, throughout the United States, Greece, Europe and Australia.
