Bernard M. Conway, age 75, of Wilmington, DE, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home on Thursday, February 21, 2013. Born in 1937, in Castlerea, County Roscommon, Ireland, he was the son of Joseph Conway and Mai Dillon Conway.
He immigrated to the United States in November 1956 not knowing anyone in the US, with forty dollars to his name and started a new life. He joined the Air Force in 1958 and was stationed in Germany, part of the Langerkopf 603rd Airborne Squadron. It was there he learned to speak fluent German as well as taking undergraduate classes towards his degree. In 1963, he moved back to the US and settled in Boston, MA putting himself through school receiving his BA in Business from the University of Hartford. He met his beautiful wife, Barbara Hansen Conway, in Boston and was married in September, 1968 until her passing in 2007, almost 40 years of marriage. He worked in Sales for ADT Security Systems from 1968-1978 in Boston and in Dulwich Village, England, where he was named top salesman in the Company for several years, a testament to his incredible outgoing personality and sharp wit. He started his own successful business in Houston, TX, Conway Insurance, from '77-'87. In 1987, he moved his family to Greenville, DE where he worked various successful sales jobs until his retirement in 2009.
He spent his retirement being a devoted grandfather and best friend to his son. He was a true gentleman and had an infectious smile that everyone he came in contact with adored. He is survived by his only son, Rory Dillon Conway Sr. and his daughter in-law, Jennifer P. Conway, his beloved grandchildren Cailin Rose, Kelsea Pitcher and Rory "Dillon" Jr. He was also survived by his brothers, Gerald Conway of Boston, MA, Patrick Conway of Southampton, England, and Joseph Conway Jr. of Ireland and preceded in death by Michael Conway of Ireland.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 12:00 PM at Saint Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Rd., Greenville, DE 19807. A visitation for family and friends will be held at church 1 hour prior, beginning at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Bernard's name to the Cancer Support Community, 4810 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807.
