Robert Lee Whetzel

Robert Lee Whetzel, age 77, of Wilmington passed away on June 27, 2013 in Orlando, Florida.

Mr. Whetzel was born in 1936 in Palmer, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Redstone High School in 1953 and served in the Korean War in Army Communications from 1953-1956. Following his discharge from military service, he attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated in 1961 with bachelor's degrees in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics. In 1975 he received an MBA from Widener University.

Bob worked as a project engineer in the aerospace and power generation industries and enjoyed a long and successful career with General Electric and Westinghouse. During his career, he traveled extensively and supported projects in Saudi Arabia, Columbia, and Japan. After his initial retirement, Bob began consulting for Siemens Westinghouse in 1999 in Florida, project-managing power plant installations. Bob and his wife Carol split their time over the past fourteen years between Wilmington, DE and Orlando, FL.

Bob was an avid sailor and spent many enjoyable hours cruising the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the Caribbean. He was one of the first volunteer crew members on the tall ship Kalmar Nyckel and helped with the construction of the ship. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and he enjoyed learning and teaching about seamanship and navigation.

Bob married Carol Ann Schmitt on January 31, 1959; they were married for 54 years. He is survived by his wife Carol, his children Robert William and his wife Michele, Cheryl Moralez and her husband Daniel, and Trish Whetzel and her wife Tricia Cerone; his grandchildren Alexandra and Michael; his brothers Averill, Jr., Raymond, Eugene, Richard and William and sisters Dorothy Schnitzhofer and Flo Nyswaner. He was preceded in death by his parents Averill and Flo (Davis) Whetzel, as well as his brother Kenneth.

A visitation for family and friends will be held at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington on Sunday, July 14 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held at Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington on Monday, July 15 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be given to the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute, Forbes Tower, Suite 8084, 3600 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
