During the mid 1930s, Carleton worked as an assayer in New Orleans, at the site of the former U.S. Mint.

His entire professional career was spent with the E.I. duPont de Nemours and Company, which he joined in Buffalo in 1940. He spent the war years working in Richmond and moved to Wilmington in 1948. During his time with duPont, Carleton held various research and management positions, retiring in 1976 as manager of the central patent index.

In retirement, Carleton also spent many years as a volunteer interpreter for the Hagley Museum and Library.

Throughout his life, he was an avid woodworker and had an extensive home workshop. In retirement, he also trained as a metal sculptor. He enjoyed travel and gardening.

On July 17, 1935 he married Irene Wasson Pittman, a marriage that lasted over 60 years until her death on February 24, 1998.

Carleton is survived by his son, Carl Edward Conrad and his wife Marijean Bryant Conrad, his daughter Susan Irene Conrad as well as 2 grandchildren, Meghan Alane Conrad and Aaron Mathew Conrad.

My deepest sympathy for your loss. Mr. Conrad was a wonder role model for me in the years after my dad died (1975). I enjoyed celebrating many 4th of July's and birthdays in our backyards in Carrcroft.
Our thoughts and prayers will be you and your families!!

My sincere condolences to Mr. Conrad's family. Your Father/Grandfather was a very interesting and distiguished man. I enjoyed our conversations at Rockland place where I was employed as receptionist when he resided there. May the Lord give you strength during this difficult time.
