"Jerry"

AGE: 72 • Wilmington

Gerald Joseph Flynn, age 72, of Wilmington, Delaware and Marco Island, Florida, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on December 6, 2013 following a long and heroic battle with kidney cancer.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware on July 5, 1941, Jerry graduated from St. Thomas School and Salesianum High School (Class of 1959), and attended the University of Delaware. He was a member of the Delaware Air National Guard. Jerry worked for DuPont for over 31 years including management roles at Eden Park, New Castle, Wilmington and the Graphics Center in Boothwyn, Pennsylvania. Following his career at DuPont he was employed by Staples Corporate sales and Loray Stationers, retiring in 2000. After his retirement, he enjoyed many happy years with wife Mary Jane at their home on Marco Island, Florida, a place he considered "paradise on earth."

Jerry was a founding board member of Mom's House, Wilmington. Jerry was known for his larger than life personality, wonderful sense of humor, boundless optimism, and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Maurice "Babe" Flynn and Catherine Woods Flynn, and by his elder brother, Bud Flynn. He is survived by his loving wife of over 48 years, Mary Jane Flynn, and was a devoted father to children Pamela Taylor (Stephen) and Jennifer Flynn. He cherished his role as "Poppy" to grandchildren Andrew and Brooke Czajkowski. Jerry's surviving family includes son-in-law Jim Czajkowski, and many cousins.

The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Gregory Masters and Mary Zimny of Helen Graham Cancer Center, Jamie Turner and Debbie of the ICU unit at Christiana Hospital and Collette Sandiford and Samuel Njore of Seasons Hospice.

Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, December 12 from 9-10:30 am at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be will follow at 11 am at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808-2297. Entombment will be in All Saints Cemetery

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Salesianum School, 1801 North Broom Street, Wilmington, DE,19802 in Jerry's memory.
