Wayne Thomas "Tiger" Litchford, 75, of Delmar, died Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, surrounded by his loving family. Wayne was born January 26, 1939 in Richmond, Virginia, a son of the late John Herbert Litchford, Sr. and Grace Elizabeth (Venable) Litchford. "Tiger," as he was known to all who loved him, graduated from Seaford High School with the class of 1957. He proudly served his country in the Delaware National Guard for 5 years during the 1950's. He retired in 1995 from Delmarva Power as a System Operator with 35 years of service. Following retirement he worked as a courier for Peninsula Cardiology and for several years worked as the manager and caretaker for St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar. He was an active and vital part of the Delmar community. He served on the Delmar Town Council for a number of years and was past president of the Delmar Little League, where he held various positions. Memberships include St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, the Salisbury Elks Lodge, the Delmar VFW Post 8276 men's auxiliary, the Delmar Kiwanis and a past member of the Delmar Lions Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, card player and Sudoku player. He enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie with his local card group, and was a self-proclaimed "CARD-iologist." He was also an avid bowler and shuffleboard player. He enjoyed the outdoors, working in his yard, gardening and loving the hummingbirds. Most important to him were his faith, his family and his friends.
He is survived by his wife, Diane E. Litchford, to whom he married in 1989; a daughter, Allyson M. Grinnan (David) of Berlin; 3 sons, Stephen Michael Litchford (Dawn) of Delmar, James G. Lewis and Brett C. Lewis, both of Elkridge; 2 granddaughters, Grace Delaney Grinnan and Madelyn Virginia Grinnan; a grandson expected to be born this summer, Jase Thomas Litchford; and 2 brothers, John Herbert "Herbie" Litchford, Jr. of Seaford and James Anderson Litchford of Goodlettsville, Tennessee. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Frances Smith; and a brother, Harold Edward Litchford.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 101 E. State Street, in Delmar, and also Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service, which begins at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Phyllis A. Walton will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Delmar Fire Department, P.O. Box 143, Delmar, DE 19940, the St. Stephen's Cemetery Trust, 101 E.
