Sofia Dzyra Cybak "Baba"

AGE: 93 • Newark

Sofia passed away at home on Sunday, September 7, 2014. Sofia was born in western Ukraine in 1921. As a young woman she was taken by the Nazis to work as slave labor in Germany, and was rescued from a building destroyed by Allied bombings. Sofia met her husband Stanislaw in a displaced persons camp in Germany. They soon got married, and she gave birth to a son Zenek, and in 1949, they emigrated to America through Ellis Island and settled in Wilmington.

Sofia was predeceased by husband Stanley and great-granddaughter Jessica.

Sofia worked in various mills in Wilmington and retired from Mullins downtown.

Sofia and Stanley adopted two family members in 1960 from Poland. Sofia loved to sing, cook and bake -- "Baba was the greatest."

Sofia is survived by her son Zenek/Marlene; daughter Halina; granddaughters Dana/Mike Davis; Denise Cybak; Sarah/Shawn Munden; Julia O'Mara; great-grandchildren Tiffany, Matthew, Rebecca, Harrison, Aiden, Chase, Sebastian and Ava.

Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, September 13 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 800 Lea Boulevard, Wilmington, Delaware 19802, where friends may call after 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the church at the above address. mealeyfuneralhomes.com
